Cabinet Door Upcycle

The Restore has countless cabinet doors that have been removed during someone's kitchen makeover. Here's just one of the ideas we came up with.

In a kitchen remodel, you get big bang for your buck by changing just the cabinet doors instead of replacing the entire set. That leaves my local Habitat For Humanity ReStore full of cabinet doors of all shapes and sizes and hardware of shapes and styles waiting for a cabinet door upcycle. My brain is full of ideas, but this was the first.

Cabinet Door Upcycle How To:

A digital drawing of how I determined the placement of the handles.
  1. Thoroughly clean your cabinet door. You don’t want any leftover bacon grease messing up your paint job.
  2. Use Wood Putty to fill old hardware holes. Let it dry and then sand putty till smooth.
  3. Paint the door. Don’t worry about getting it perfect. You can do a touch-up 2nd coat. Let the paint dry thoroughly between coats.
  4. Use Big Top topcoat to cover the entire painted surface. When dry, paint a second coat on the top for added durability.
  5. Determine the placement of your handles by measuring the length of the cabinet door and the length of the screw placement on your handle. My door was 14 inches long. I marked the center at 7 inches. My handles’ screws were 3 inches apart so I marked my door at 5.5” and 8.5”, an inch and a half from the center on each side.
  6. Sand the back of the door to make sure the drilled holes are smooth.
  7. Attach handles
