The weather is changing in Northwest Wyoming and I’m going to want my garage parking place back soon. So this hutch can’t wait much longer. I told you about my garage sale find HERE and my inspiration pieces HERE.
The hardware was removed, the glass taped off and I did a quick sanding to remove the drips of stain and polyurethane left by the last brave soul who took on refinishing this hutch. This left me with a smooth surface.
I applied the red, oil-based paint that I found in the garage. I figured free paint was the correct paint to use. I was wrong.
One, oil-based paint is a pain in the backside to clean up. You might as well throw away the brushes and you’ll be forced to use paint thinner on your skin. Absorbing that smelly mess can’t be good.
Two, it was a primer which I incorrectly guessed would take the finishing wax similar to the way chalk paint does. Because it didn’t, I didn’t get the rich red I was hoping for.
I knew I’d need to go over the primer with something else. I was cruising the Wal-Mart craft aisle and the have chalk paint!!! I can’t compare its quality because I am still a chalk paint novice, but I’m happy so far. I purchased Waverly Inspirations Chalk Paint, Ocean and Waverly Inspirations Chalk Paint, Ink
(affiliate links) and mixed them in a bowl to create a greyish navy.
16 ounces of paint was not enough to cover everything. Close, but not quite, so I went back to the store and they were out of the Ink color. I was able to order online and they’ll be shipped to my store at the end of the week.
